अगस्त का महीना था। काली अँधेरी रात थी। बहुत तेज बारिश होरी थी । आकाश में बिजली चमक रही थी। मोहन चाचा अपने घर से दूर अपने खेतमें चारपाई में सोए हुए थे। उनका खेत गाँव के तालाब के पास था। बारिश के कारण पूरा तालाब भर गया था और खेत में घास भी ज्यादा हो गई थी। उसके कारण अंधेरे में  यह सब ज़्यादा डरावना लग रहा था। उस तालाब के किनारे संतरे के 6 -7 बड़े बड़े पेड़ थी। संतरे के पेड़ की डालियो के आवाज भी काफी डरावना लगता था।

अचानक खेत में  बंधी हुई भैंसो ने चिल्लाना शरु कर दिया।मोहन चाचा  को पता ही नहीं चल रहा थी की आखिर यह भैंसे ऐसा क्यों कर रही है। उन्हें लगा की शायद ठंडी के कारन यह भैंसे ऐसा कर रही होगी। इसी लिए मोहन चाचा के खेत में चिमनी जलाई। उस चिमनी के उजाले में मोहन चाचा  की नजर उनके चारपाई पे पड़ी। उन्होंने देखा की एक औरत उनकी खाट पर बैठी है। यह देख कर उनका शरीर डर के मारे कांपने लगा। उसी वक्त आकाश में बिजली का तेज झटका हुआ।

वैसे तो मोहन चाचा  बहादुर थे, लेकिन आज उन्हें भी  थोड़ा डर लग रहा था। उसी वक्त काका ने आग में सूखी घास डाली और आग को ज्यादा बढ़ाया इसकी वजह से वो औरत ठीक से दिखाई दे रही थी। मोहन चाचा ने तापने के साथ बैठे बैठे ही बोला की कौन है पर कुछ हलचल नई मिली। इसीलिए काका चौक गए। उनकी समझ  में कुछ नई आया। चाचा खड़े हो गए।इसलिए मोहन  चाचा  ने सोचा की अब डरने से कुछ नई होगा , मुझे हिम्मत से काम लेना पड़ेगा क्यूँकि में बहादुर हूँ। 

चाचा ने एक बड़ी लकड़ी हाथ में लेली और बोले कौन हो तुम? तुम्हे क्या लगता है, की मैं तुमसे डर गया हूँ ?लेकिन सच तो यही था की चाचा अंदर से पूरी तरह से डर के मरे कांपने लगे थे। चाचा का यह गुस्से वाला रूप देखकर वो औरत  खड़ी हो गई और जोर से बोली, क्या तुम मुझसे नहीं डरते । चाचा ने हिम्मत की और बोले, यहां से चली जाओ वरना यह लकड़ी से मार मार के तेरा सिर फोड़ दूंगा। इतना ही बोलता मोहन चाचा ने लकड़ी उठाई और उसी वक्त उस औरत ने आवाज उठाई।

अब तू मुझे मेरे ही घर से बाहर निकालेगा? यहां पर तो मेरा बचपन गुजरा है। यह मेरा ही घर है मैं यहां सालों से रह रही हूं। यह सुनकर चाचा का डर और गुस्सा दोनों ही शांत हो गए। उन्हें लग रहा था कि मेरे सामने जो औरत खड़ी है उसे मैं जानता हूं, उसकी आवाज भी जानी पहचानी लग रही थी। चाचा सोचने लगे कि आखिर यह औरत है कौन? अगर मैं इस औरत को जानता हूं तो आखिर यह इतनी भयानक और डरावने रूप में क्यों है? अचानक, अरे यह  तो मोहिनी  है, मेरी बड़ी बहन। बचपन में मैं और मोहिनी साथ में ही खेत में चारा काटने का काम करते थे।

अब मोहन  को पूरी बात समझ में आ गई। यह मोहिनी  के बचपन की बात है। 

जब मोहिनी 14 साल की थी तब इसी खेत में गांव के कुछ बच्चों के साथ खेल रही थी। दूसरे बच्चों की तरह मोहिनी भी पेड़ पर चढ़कर एक डाल से दूसरे में डाल पर छलांग लगा रही थी । अचानक मोहिनी जिस डाल पर बैठी थी वह डाल टूट गई और मोहिनी  मुंह के बल नीचे गिर गई। यह देखकर सारे बच्चे डर के मारे चिल्लाने लगे। बच्चों के  चिल्लाने की आवाज सुनकर बड़े लोग वहाँ पहुँचे  और मोहिनी को  उठाके हॉस्पिटल ले गए लेकिन तबतक काफी देर हो चुकी थी। मोहिनी  की मौत हो गई थी। मोहन चाचा  को ये सारी बाते याद आ गई, और वह सीधा मोहिनी  के पास जाके रोने लगे। 

जब यह बात गाँव वालों को पता चली तो सारे गाँव वाले चोंक उठे थे। वास्तव में वह मोहिनी ही थी। गाँव के एक बूढ़े ने कहा कि, जब मोहिनी की मौत  हुई थी तब वो एक बच्ची थी। इसी लिए उसे बच्चा समझ के उसे दफ़नाया गया था। लेकिन वास्तव में उसका अंतिम संस्कर करने की जरूरत था । इसी लिए मोहिनी की आत्मा आज तक भटक रही है।मोहन चाचा  ने तुरंत ही मोहिनी को  जहा दफ़नाया गया था वहां से उसे निकाला। 

किसी की भी हिम्मत  नही हो रही थी कि कोई उसके पास भी जा सके। उसी वक्त मोहिनी की आत्मा ने गाँव वालों के सामने आके कहा कि, हाँ, आपकी बात सही है, मैं मर चुकी हूं, आपलोगो को मुझसे डर ने की जरूरत नही है, मैं अभी भी इसी गाँव की बेटी हु, लेकिन मैं आज तक भटक रही हूँ , मुझे मुक्ति दीजिये। बाद में मोहन चाचा  ने मोहिनी के शव का अंतिम संस्कार किया और उसकी आत्मा को शांति दिलाई।

Usake kaaran andhere mein yah sab zyaada daraavana lag raha tha. Us taalaab ke kinaare santare ke 6 -7 bade bade ped thee. Santare ke ped kee daaliyo ke aavaaj bhee kaaphee daraavana lagata tha.

Achaanak khet mein bandhee huee bhainso ne chillaana sharu kar diya.mohan chaacha ko pata hee nahin chal raha thee kee aakhir yah bhainse aisa kyon kar rahee hai. Unhen laga kee shaayad thandee ke kaaran yah bhainse aisa kar rahee hogee. Isee lie mohan chaacha ke khet mein chimanee jalaee. Us chimanee ke ujaale mein mohan chaacha kee najar unake chaarapaee pe padee. Unhonne dekha kee ek aurat unakee khaat par baithee hai. Yah dekh kar unaka shareer dar ke maare kaampane laga. Usee vakt aakaash mein bijalee ka tej jhataka hua.

Vaise to mohan chaacha bahaadur the, lekin aaj unhen bhee thoda dar lag raha tha. Usee vakt kaaka ne aag mein sookhee ghaas daalee aur aag ko jyaada badhaaya isakee vajah se vo aurat theek se dikhaee de rahee thee. Itana hee bolata mohan chaacha ne lakadee uthaee aur usee vakt us aurat ne aavaaj uthaee.

Ab too mujhe mere hee ghar se baahar nikaalega? Yahaan par to mera bachapan gujara hai. Yah mera hee ghar hai main yahaan saalon se rah rahee hoon. Yah sunakar chaacha ka dar aur gussa donon hee shaant ho gae. Unhen lag raha tha ki mere saamane jo aurat khadee hai use main jaanata hoon, usakee aavaaj bhee jaanee pahachaanee lag rahee thee. It was the month of August. It was a dark dark night. It was raining very heavily. Lightning was shining in the sky. Mohan’s uncle was sleeping in a bunk in his field, away from his home. His farm was near the village pond. Due to the rain, the entire pond was filled and the grass in the field was also overgrown. Because of that it all seemed more scary in the dark. There were 6-7 big orange trees on the bank of that pond. The sound of the branches of the orange tree was also very scary.

Suddenly the buffaloes tied in the field started shouting. Mohan uncle was not even aware of why this buffalo is doing this. They thought that perhaps this buffalo must be doing this due to the cold. That is why a fireplace was lit in Mohan uncle’s field. In the light of that fireplace, Mohan uncle’s eyes fell on his cot. He saw a woman sitting on his cot. Seeing this, his body started trembling with fear. At the same time there was a lightning strike in the sky.

Although Mohan uncle was brave, today he was also feeling a little scared. At the same time, Kaka put dry grass in the fire and increased the fire, due to which the woman was clearly visible. Mohan uncle, sitting with Taapne, said who was there, but some movement was new. That’s why Kaka went to Chowk. Something new came to his senses. Uncle stood up. So Mohan uncle thought that now something new will happen because of fear, I have to act with courage because I am brave.

Uncle took a big wood in his hand and said who are you? What do you think, that I am scared of you? But the truth was that the uncle was trembling with fear from inside. Seeing this angry look of uncle, the woman stood up and said loudly, are you not afraid of me? Uncle dared and said, go away from here or else I will beat you with wood and break your head. He felt that I knew the woman standing in front of me, her voice also seemed familiar. Uncle started thinking, “Who is this woman?” If I know this woman then why is she in such a terrifying and scary form? Suddenly, oh it’s Mohini, my elder sister. As a child, Mohini and I used to work together as fodder in the field. Now Mohan understood the whole thing. This is from Mohini’s childhood.

When Mohini was 14 years old, she was playing in the same field with some children of the village. Like other children, Mohini was also climbing the tree and jumping from branch to branch. Suddenly the branch on which Mohini was sitting broke and Mohini fell down on her face. Seeing this, all the children started crying in fear. Hearing the screams of the children, the elders reached there and picked up Mohini and took her to the hospital, but by then it was too late. Mohini had died. Mohan uncle remembered all these things, and he went straight to Mohini and started crying.

When the villagers came to know about this, all the villagers were shocked. She was actually a Mohini. An old man of the village said that when Mohini died, she was a child. That’s why he was buried as a child. But he really needed to be cremated. That’s why Mohini’s soul is wandering till today. Mohan’s uncle immediately took Mohini out of the place where she was buried.

No one was daring that anyone could even go near him. At the same time Mohini’s soul came in front of the villagers and said, yes, you are right, I am dead, you do not need to fear me, I am still the daughter of this village, but I have wandered till today.
